FRIEDR. HERDER ABR. SOHN is the earliest German Cutlery Co. recorded, beginning in 1632. They were very active in the late 1870's - 1880's, and were well poised to help take over the World domination of cutlery by Germany between the series of U.S. tariffs on imported Sheffield cutlery that began in 1891. By 1900, Germany's cutlery exports had exceeded Sheffield cutlery exports. This knife came off a Factory mounted cardboard display of about 2 dozen knives in different sizes, patterns and handle material; and most  had pattern numbers on the Master blade. This is a scarce and desirable Whittler Pattern pocket knife. Overall this Folding pocket knife has a length is 6 7/8" long with the blades extended at both ends. The rounded end bolsters are German silver. The Master blade is 2 1/8" long with a ground swedge to both sides 1 1/4" back from the tip and an early style long grove nail nick. The pen blade is 1 7/8" long, and the nail blade is file serrated with a sharpened knife point and edge. All 3 blades are hot stamped with the Makers logo and name, and are made with no half stops. The blades are Mint with all of the orginal Factory high polish finish. I would call them Pristine Mint, but even dead mint knives have minuscule handling marks that can only be seen under magnification; so I am labeling them Mint condition. The back springs have an early style tapering liner that separates the 2 springs at the double blade end, and tapers to be thin, then ends about 1" from the end of the springs, so the Master blade has two side by side springs that create a thunderous snap. The springs are so strong, it is difficult to open the Master blade without a blade helper, as there is not wear to the joint or weakening of the springs from use. This Whittler also has an unusual combination of brass liners and German silver pins. The Select Mother of Pearl scales have iridescence that is found on pearl before the oceans became polluted, and is not diminished by typical surface scratches from typical pocket wear. There is one small that is hard to see aberration of the pearl at one end pin, but can be seen with magnification; however, this is a naturally occurring laying of the pearl, and is not a flaw. The escutcheon plate is rounded at the ends, and inlaid using an old school tool called a Parser. There are small scalloped cuts to the top edge of the scales called an Easy Opener, to allow better access to the blade nail nicks. This knife is off the same knife boards from this Factory Salesman collection, and some have no inked blade marking, as this piece has no ink markings. Weight is 1.5 ounces. This is an exceptional mint Mother of Pearl pocket knife in the desirable Whittler pattern.
