    Description

Offered are these antique art instruction booklets and other items produced by the Dept. of Art Instruction of the Meyer Both Co. of Chicago. Included are:
    1) "Booklets, Catalogs, Folders and Broadsides-Their Construction and Design", with a copyright date of 1922. There are numerous illustrations, including two pages showing examples of completed work of the period and a page with sample page decorations in late Art Nouveau/early Art Deco style. Note that the text mentions a "dummy" booklet for the student's use but this is not included. The booklet is approx. 11 3/4" x 9" and contains 20 pages. It is in good condition for its age. The cover is still attached. It has browned, mainly around the edges, and has a few small stains but is overall quite good. Pages 9-12 are detached but present. The pages have yellowed but are generally clean and clear.
    2) "Design", with a copyright date of 1923. The book contains numerous illustrations. Also included are four sheets containing a total of 198 illustrations of design elements from many cultures, including classical Greek and Rome, ancient Egypt, Celtic and many more. The booklet is approx. 11 3/4" x 9" and contains 14 pages. It is in good condition for a paperback book of its age. The cover is still mostly attached, although loose in parts. It has browned, mainly around the edges, and has a few small stains but is overall quite good. The pages have yellowed but are generally clean and clear. The charts have some small edge tears and a few small ink or paint stains on the front, more on the back. Chart 2 has a larger stain where it looks like an inked wood block or something similar was sitting. Chart 4 has part of the border area missing in the upper-right corner.
    3) "Photo Retouching", with a copyright date of 1922. The accompanying charts are missing so none of the figures mentioned in the text are included. The booklet is approx. 11 3/4" x 9" and contains 14 pages. It is in good condition overall, but the cover is detached. The pages have yellowed but are generally clean and clear.
    4) "Opaque Wash", with a copyright date of 1927.The booklet is approx. 11 3/4" x 9" and contains only three pages of text, plus a two-page chart of figures, so it may be incomplete; I'm not sure. It is in good condition overall, but the chart is detached (it may have always been) and the pages are almost detached. The pages have yellowed and have some light staining but the text is easily readable.
    5) "Transparent Wash", with a copyright date of 1925.The booklet is approx. 11 3/4" x 9" and contains only two pages of text, plus two two-page charts of figures, so it may be incomplete; I'm not sure. It is in good condition overall, but the charts are detached (they may have always been). The pages have yellowed but are generally clean and clear and are well-attached to the cover.
    6) Three additional two-page charts labeled "Composition", with copyright dates of 1920 and 1926.
    7) Other miscellaneous loose charts, graphics, pages, etc. One is a title page to an instruction book from the Lockwood Art School of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Another is the title page to the Students Art Magazine put out by the school. None of these items are dated but look to be from the 1920s, also.
These are rare finds. At the time of original listing I could only find a few similar items from this company for sale on eBay.
