1931 Walt Disney Donald Duck Book Ends Plaster Cast Copyrighted. In 1931 Walt Disney was looking for a barnyard friend for his super hero creation Mickey Mouse . The purpose of the search was for the movie “ The Adventures of Mickey Mouse .
During that year an Australian cricket team was touring the US. One of its stars was a player named Donald Bradman . During a game Bradman was disqualified for a “ Duck “ a term used in cricket for a penalty . This gave Walt Disney the idea and inspiration for “ Donald Duck , “ thus an American cartoon icon was created .
Disney wanted the duck character ( associated with water ) to be more than a barnyard friend looking like a regular duck . He changed the ducks long bill and beady eyes into a “ human like duck “ Disney associated water with ducks and the Navy . That’s how Donald got a sailor hat and jacket . Not only that , he got a voice box and spoke English .
Originally , Donald’s sailors hat and uniform were green . That’s the cast bookends we have on sale for the 1931 movie . Later , of course , his colors were changed to blue and white . In 1934 Donald starred in “ Wise Little Hen . “
The pieces we have on auction are almost 90 years old . ( we think ) They have chips and distortions , but they are structurally sound , historic , and a lot of fun
For authencity the plaster has written on it “Walt Disney USA “ on the back and an encircled C for copyrighted.
This is not the only pair in existence. They are rare . If you are a Disney Collection person you might want to have this historic piece in your possession.
